Celebrate Kindness Instead of Chocolate

*Taking a break from my normal marketing ramblings to do a more heartfelt and personal post. But don’t you worry, next week the marketing articles will be in full swing 🙂

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, I’m a skeptic. And no, this isn’t the bitter rantings of a single girl (happily married for 3 years, thank you very much.) Valentine’s Day has always struck me as nothing more than a giant marketing gimmick; a Hallmark holiday invented to keep sales up after the Christmas rush.

This year, however, I’ve got a slightly different perspective. As I hear more and more stories of school shootings, a crazed ex cop on a murder rampage, protests held by hate groups and endless stories of domestic violence, it becomes more and more apparent that we need more love in this world. Not gushy, emotional, chocolate filled love, but genuine love, kindness and common courtesy.

This Valentine’s Day I challenge you to celebrate differently. Instead of spending money giving cards and flowers to friends and lovers (all of whom I’m sure you show love to everyday) take the time to show kindness to a stranger, or better yet, an enemy. Smile at someone as you pass them on the street. Give the cashier at the grocery store a compliment. Ask your neighbor if he needs help finishing that yard work. Reach out to a coworker you don’t often talk to and see if she wants to go to lunch.

Genuine love and kindness is a beautiful thing and, as cliche as it sounds, showing kindness to even one person can make a big difference. So strap on your cupid wings, load up your bow and arrow and go shoot some love into the world this Valentine’s Day. Below are some quotes about love to give you some inspiration. Happy Valentine’s Day!

“We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness.” -Charlie Chaplin

“The true essence of humankind is kindness. There are other qualities which come from education or knowledge, but it is essential, if one wishes to be a genuine human being and impart satisfying meaning to one’s existence, to have a good heart.” – Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama

“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” – Scott Adams, Creator of Dilbert Comic Strip

“Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference.” – Helen James

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.”- Mother Teresa

“What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness?” – Jean Jacques Rousseau

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” – Helen Keller

“Just because an animal is large, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo.” – Pooh’s Little Instruction Book (inspired by A.A. Milne)

“We’re here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark.” – Whoopi Goldberg

“Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care, kindness and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.” – Og Mandino

“Always be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle.” – Plato

“Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.” – William Arthur Ward

“I have decided to stick with love. Hat is too great a burden to bear.”- Martin Luther King Jr.

“Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives.” – CS Lewis
